प्रश्न 12 : Critically analyse the following passage:

Editor: There is a charge laid against us that we are a lazy people and that Europeans are industrious and enterprising. We have accepted the charge and we therefore wish to change our condition. Hinduism, Islam, Zoroastrianism, Christianity and all other religions teach that we should remain passive about worldly pursuits and active about godly pursuits, that we should set a limit to our worldly ambition and that our religious ambition should be illimitable. Our activity should be directed into the latter channel.

Reader: You seem to be encouraging religious charlatanism. Many a cheat has, by talking in a similar strain, led the people astray.

Editor: You are bringing an unlawful charge against religion. Humbug there undoubtedly is about all religions. Where there is light, there is also shadow. I am prepared to maintain that humbugs in worldly matters are far worse than the humbugs in religion.

विज्ञान प्रकृति को जानने का महत्वपूर्ण साधन है। भौतिकता आज आधुनिक वैज्ञानिक और तकनीकी प्रगति का स्तर निर्धारित करती है। विज्ञान केवल सत्य, अर्थ और प्रकृति के बारे में उपयोग ही नहीं बल्कि प्रकृति की खोज का एक क्रम है। विज्ञान प्रकृति को जानने का एक महत्वपूर्ण साधन है। व्यक्ति जिस बात पर विश्वास करता है वही उसका ज्ञान बन जाता है। कुछ लोगों के पास अनुचित या ज्ञान होता है और वह उसी या ज्ञान को सत्य मानके उसके अनुसार कार्य करते हैं। वैज्ञानिकता और आलोचनात्मक विचार उस समय जरुरी होते है जब वह विश्वसनीय ज्ञान पर आधारित हो। वैज्ञानिक और आलोचक अक्सर तर्क संगत विचारों का प्रयोग करते हैं। हमें हमें उचित सोचने पर प्रेरित करते हैं। कुछ लोग तर्क संगत विचारधारा नहीं रखते क्योंकि उन्होंने कभी तर्क करना जीवन में सीखा ही नहीं होता। वैज्ञानिक प्रकृति के बाह्य रूप का अवलोकन करता है और सत्य की खोज करता है, परन्तु कवि बाह्य रूप पर मुग्ध होकर उससे भावों का तादात्म्य स्थापित करता है। वैज्ञानिक प्रकृति की जिस वस्तु का अवलोकन करता है, उसका सूक्ष्म निरीक्षण भी करता है।
